Riccarton is one of the city’s oldest suburbs, surrounding one of the last remnants of native bush in Christchurch city, known as Deans Bush after one of the first families to settle in the area. The historic homestead built by the Deans family, Riccarton House, is located in Deans Bush, alongside the original cottage.
Riccarton is a very popular area with students, due to its close proximity to the University of Canterbury campus at Ilam, and the convenience of the extensive shopping in Riccarton, which includes Westfield Mall and a range of shops, cafes and restaurants up and down Riccarton Road. Large areas of Riccarton are also in the school zones for Boys High and Girls High, which also makes the area quite sought after.
The suburb of Riccarton is bisected by Riccarton Road, which is a major arterial route into and out of the city for traffic heading towards the southwest.
